Reformulating an Existing SKU to Vegan Nutraceutical Ingredients: A Sequencing Guide for the 2027 Deadline

The FSSAI vegan logo becomes mandatory on 1 July 2027, and most brands are treating it as a packaging job. It is not. Because a vegan endorsement is granted against a specific formulation, the order in which you switch to vegan nutraceutical ingredients determines whether you file once or three times.

Get the sequence wrong and the pattern is predictable: artwork is signed off, endorsement is applied for, then R&D discovers the anti-caking agent or the capsule shell is not compliant. The formulation changes, the endorsement has to be reapplied for, and the artwork is obsolete. Every one of those steps costs money and calendar.

This is the sequence that avoids it. It works backwards from 1 July 2027 and treats the switch to vegan nutraceutical ingredients as a regulatory project with a critical path, not a procurement swap. If you are starting in late 2026, you have room – but less than it looks, because two of the steps cannot be compressed.

What the Regulation Actually Requires

The FSS (Vegan Foods) Regulations, 2022 define vegan food as food containing no ingredients, additives or processing aids of animal origin, which has also not been exposed to animal-derived substances during production, processing or packaging.

Two words in that definition do most of the damage to existing formulations: processing aids and exposed. A product can be free of animal ingredients and still fail on a release agent, a carrier, a filtration aid or a shared line that ran a non-vegan product before it.

The standardised green “V” logo was notified in the Gazette in May 2026, with display becoming mandatory from 1 July 2027. Endorsement is granted per product – flavour variants of the same product require separate applications, while multiple SKUs of the same product do not.

The clause that sets the whole sequence: FSSAI guidance requires reapplication for vegan endorsement when a product’s ingredients, additives or processing aids change. Quantity changes alone do not trigger it. That single rule means every formulation decision must be final before the endorsement application goes in – which is why swapping to vegan nutraceutical ingredients has to come first, not last.

The Correct Sequence, In Order

Each step depends on the one before it. Running them in parallel is how brands end up filing twice.

  1. Full bill-of-materials audit. Every ingredient, additive, processing aid, carrier, coating, capsule shell, ink and lubricant. Not just the actives – the actives are almost never the problem.
  2. Source and qualify replacements. Identify vegan nutraceutical ingredients for each non-compliant line item, obtain origin documentation, and confirm the replacement performs in your process before you commit.
  3. Lock the formulation. Freeze the bill of materials. From this point, any change resets the regulatory clock.
  4. Line and process compliance. Document GMP cleaning between non-vegan and vegan runs, or dedicate the line. Exposure during processing and packaging counts.
  5. Stability and shelf-life work. Run the study on the final formulation. This is the step that cannot be compressed.
  6. Endorsement application. Submit with the full document pack against the locked formulation.
  7. Artwork and logo placement. Only now. The packaging layout has to show the logo space, and you do not want to redraw it twice.
  8. Production changeover and old-stock run-down. Plan the switchover date against remaining inventory of legacy packaging.

The Two Steps That Set Your Real Deadline

Stability testing

India sits in ICH climatic Zone IVb, the most demanding classification, with accelerated stability conditions of 40°C and 75% relative humidity. A six-month accelerated study can typically support a 24-month shelf-life claim.

That six months runs on the final formulation. If the formulation moves, the study restarts. This is the single strongest argument for locking the bill of materials before anything else begins.

Endorsement processing

Endorsement is applied for per product, at a published fee of ₹25,000 per product excluding GST. Current guidance points to both an online endorsement route and a physical submission to the Advisor (Science and Standards) at FSSAI, FDA Bhawan, New Delhi, with soft copies to the vegan foods desk. Confirm the live route before you file – the process has been clarified more than once since 2022.

Working Backwards From 1 July 2027

The table below is a planning skeleton, not a promise. Adjust the durations to your own portfolio size and testing partner, but keep the order.

Where Existing Formulations Usually Break

In our experience with Indian supplement brands, the failure points cluster in a small number of places – and rarely in the ingredient the marketing team is proud of.

  • Vitamin D3. Conventionally derived from lanolin, a sheep’s wool derivative. Lichen-derived D3 is the plant-origin route, and one of the most common single swaps a brand has to make.
  • Capsule shells. Gelatin remains the default in many contract-manufactured products; a switch to a plant-based shell can change dissolution behaviour.
  • Collagen and joint actives. Bovine, porcine and marine sources are standard. Fermentation-derived and algae-origin alternatives exist among vegan nutraceutical ingredients but are not drop-in identical.
  • Carriers and flow agents. Magnesium stearate is frequently animal-derived and rarely audited.
  • Coatings, glazes and inks. Often specified by a packaging vendor and never re-examined.

Build the audit around this list first. It usually accounts for the majority of the work.

Choosing Replacements That Do Not Cost You Twice

A replacement that is technically vegan but commercially weak creates a second problem. Three criteria are worth applying to every candidate on the list of vegan nutraceutical ingredients you shortlist.

Table 2: Screening criteria for replacement ingredients

CriterionWhat good looks likeWhat to ask for
Documented plant originTraceable to a named non-animal sourceOrigin declaration plus manufacturer COA
Process compatibilityPerforms in your existing equipmentTrial quantity before commercial order
Regulatory fileIngredient already recognised for use in IndiaFSSAI file reference where applicable
Clinical substantiationHuman data supporting the claim you makePublished study references, not summaries
Supply continuityNamed supply position, documentedDistribution agreement and allocation terms

The clinical row matters more than it looks. If you are reformulating anyway, this is the cheapest moment you will ever have to upgrade from a commodity input to a clinically studied one – the testing and filing costs are already being spent.

Key Takeaways

  • The vegan logo becomes mandatory on 1 July 2027; endorsement is per product, not per SKU.
  • Ingredient, additive or processing-aid changes trigger reapplication – quantity changes do not.
  • Lock the formulation before stability testing and before endorsement filing.
  • A six-month accelerated study at Zone IVb conditions is the step you cannot compress.
  • Artwork comes last, after the endorsement is filed against a locked specification.
  • Reformulation is the cheapest window to upgrade to clinically studied vegan nutraceutical ingredients, because the regulatory cost is already committed.

FAQs: Vegan Nutraceutical Ingredients and the 2027 Deadline

1. When does the FSSAI vegan logo become mandatory?

Display of the standardised vegan logo becomes mandatory from 1 July 2027. The amendment was notified in the Gazette in May 2026, giving businesses a transition window to complete reformulation, endorsement and packaging changes before that date.

2. Does a change of ingredient supplier require a fresh vegan endorsement?

If the change alters the product’s ingredients, additives or processing aids, FSSAI guidance requires reapplication. A change in the quantity of an existing ingredient does not. This is why the formulation should be locked before the endorsement application is submitted.

3. Do I need a separate endorsement for every SKU?

No. Multiple stock-keeping units of the same product do not require separate applications. However, different products from the same firm, and flavour variants of the same product, each require their own endorsement, and a marketer with multiple manufacturing units must apply for each unit.

4. What documents are needed for a vegan endorsement application?

Typically the product formulation and ingredient list, declarations of non-animal origin, a manufacturing flow chart, the packaging layout showing logo placement, a self-declaration in the prescribed annexure, and a copy of the valid FSSAI licence. Confirm the current pack before filing.

5. How long does stability testing take for a reformulated product?

India falls in ICH climatic Zone IVb, with accelerated conditions of 40°C and 75% relative humidity. A six-month accelerated study can generally support a 24-month shelf-life claim, and it must be run on the final formulation, so it should start immediately after the bill of materials is frozen.

6. Which ingredients most often block a vegan claim in supplements?

Vitamin D3 derived from lanolin, gelatin capsule shells, animal-sourced collagen and chondroitin, animal-derived magnesium stearate, and coatings or glazes specified by a packaging vendor. Processing aids and carriers are audited least often and cause a disproportionate share of failures.
